Total isolation, low noise, and maximum power transfer to enable the best performance possible from your McIntosh components. It utilizes a two-chassis design where the control and power sections are completely separate from the audio section. Inside each, the left and right channels are electrically and mechanically isolated from each other to allow true dual mono operation — resulting in the ultimate stereo separation and sonic purity.

The two units are connected together via a pair of specially designed, high performance umbilical cables that are shielded to prevent outside noise from leaking into the audio signal. While they are two separate units, when connected they act as one and are easy to control and operate from the included remote control or the C Controller front panel. All power control, data ports and external control connections are located in the C Controller; the introduction of a dual microprocessor allows for an improved robustness of the control system.

The C Vacuum Tube Preamplifier houses the audio connections and circuitry, featuring a total of 12 analog inputs: 6 balanced, 4 unbalanced, plus adjustable loading Moving Magnet and Moving Coil phono inputs. For outputs, 2 sets of balanced and 2 sets of unbalanced connections provide flexibility in connecting to your amplifier. Twelve vacuum tubes 6 each of 12AX7a and 12AT7 power the tube preamplifier. Compared to the C preamplifier which had 8 tubes, the additional 4 tubes in the C lowers its dependency on any solid-state support.

The amplifier circuit has much higher common mode rejection, so any noise introduced by interconnect cables is significantly reduced. The Home Theater Pass Through feature allows for seamless integration into your existing multi-channel home theater system. The C preamplifier employs fully balanced circuitry to match the level of performance achieved in any of our Quad Balanced amplifiers. With classic McIntosh black glass front panels, blue meters, knobs, stainless steel chassis, illuminated logos and custom machined brushed aluminum end caps, the C makes a visual statement in addition to its audio prowess.

T he McIntosh name can bring up all sorts of memories, images, assumptions, and yes, yearning for many audiophiles and non-audiophiles alike. The first thing that comes to my mind when I think about McIntosh components is their history.

One of the first pieces of high-end equipment I ever owned was a McIntosh MC monoblock, a pair of which powered speakers in my basement system in the s while I was still in high school. They were founded inmoved into their Binghamton factory in McIntosh is the leading company in the McIntosh Group of audio companies, with all engineering, design, and production taking place in the Binghamton location.

I could fill quite a few pages discussing McIntosh's history. I won't.

Dell desktop keyboard and mouse not working

Instead, I'll say that McIntosh continues to produce products that are instantly recognizable by all but the most sheltered of audiophiles. When the McIntosh C preamplifier arrived at my home for review, I immediately installed it in my system. The C looked fabulous on the third shelf of my Arcici Suspense equipment rack. On its front panel were its two recognizable blue meters on either side, the McIntosh name in its familiar font glowing a soft green smack dab in the center, and its two silver rimmed control knobs on either side made me feel as though I had arrived.

Finally, after more than 35 years, I once again had a McIntosh component in my system. Like the McIntosh C, it is a vacuum tube unit. But lately I've been using many other preamps in my system. All of them have been excellent solid-state preamps. These days, the difference in sound one gets when using a solid-state preamplifier vs. Certainly not as huge as it once was. Both solid-state and vacuum tube component manufacturers are getting very good at making preamplifiers that sound like excellent preamplifiers, and the difference between these excellent preamps often has more to do with the fact that one is powered by tubes, the other transistors. Its successor the C has been even more popular.

Building upon those successes is the C which incorporates the best of the previous models while adding our advanced digital audio section and upgraded tube circuitry design. The C is a versatile vacuum tube preamplifier with an expansive set of 16 inputs to connect virtually all your analog or digital music sources.

For audio purity, the analog and digital sections are housed separately in our dual chassis design to prevent signal corruption. Analog inputs include 3 balanced, 4 unbalanced plus 1 each dedicated Moving Magnet and Moving Coil phono inputs.

Three sets of balanced and unbalanced analog outputs will connect the C to your amplifier. I was not only surprised with its sonic performance, but that this performance comes with so many features. Its number of inputs, tone controls, programmability, not to mention high-performance internal DAC and superb phono section.

It has everything you need in one cabinet, which looks much more expensive than it is. The sound of C is so natural, and it does not matter what kind of input you use. With the C, all inputs can be renamed to your preference and are available all of the time, giving you more freedom to configure your system. Bass and treble tone controls can adjust individual sources as needed. The Home Theater Pass Through feature allows for seamless integration into your multi-channel home theater system.

It has been profiled and tested by both Roon and McIntosh for maximum compatibility. Roon will recognize it and send it audio optimized for its capabilities. No fiddling with checkboxes or dropdowns, Roon Tested devices are automatically identified and configured out of the box for a superior customer experience. If you want to change settings, a remote is a must. You would have trouble selling or trading in that preamp without those two items. The DAC in the C isn't the greatest. I ended up trading the C in for a C52, which is a much better preamp. StandingstonesMay 2, Location: Seattle. No issues with my friends C Put some NOS tubes in there, and it is truly awesome! The Digital section of the C is fully-capable of native DSD decoding when used with a music program that supports this such as JRiver It will also decode DoP files if that is how the files are received. And why was the choice made to not make the design fully balanced?

The fully-balanced circuit size, the required doubling of parts count, and its related complexity was implemented in the top of the line C Since the C has very high specifications compared to competing designs, we feel it is the correct choice at this price point in our lineup. The balanced phase conversion is performed by a simple transistor as it is not required to change gain in any way. Since we build all of our chassis, we have adopted this design throughout many products.

Shielding of the analog section from hum and buzz is a primary design goal. ML: Each model is controlled by digital logic circuits for switching and programable features like naming inputs, volume offsets between sources, cartridge loading, etc. The C has specific operational software that takes some time to perfect to our desired feel and function. And did the designers do a number of listening tests with different tube suppliers before settling on the final brand?

Since all power supply and voltage regulation is handled by transistors, the job of the tube is simplified to only audio. The C will meet performance goals with fairly worn tubes and it is also easy on tube life as we do not stress the tubes close to their design limits.

Long tube life has always been a McIntosh engineering goal. We use JJ tubes at this time as they perform well and can meet our requirements. Yes, it has tubes But Ive sent them an email just to confirm your question. I remember in the late 80's and 90's auditioning their gear and being left cold. I have to assume all the positive press these last few years means they have upped their game.
